Thermal and tribological properties of group V base fluids in electrical motors, gears and battery cooling applications.

  • Battery thermal management
  • Dielectric fluids
  • Hybrid lubrication
  • Transmission fluids

This presentation aims to highlight the ability of group V base fluids and in particular esters in addressing these challenges. Hybrid and electric vehicles contain an electric motor and varying amounts of gears depending on the vehicle. These components must be maintained at a suitable operating temperature whilst the gears must be lubricated efficiently. One solution available to OEMs is the combined use of a lubricant for gear and electric motor cooling for which esters are an excellent choice. In the case of battery cooling, this work aims to highlight the advantages of using a submerged cooling system vs other more conventional methods such as plate cooling for use in fast charging applications.

A novel friction reducitng ePTFE coating for Elastormer Seals

  • Applicable for valves in thermal management, shaft seals, hydraulic seals
  • Saving energy, reducing torque, prolong seal life
  • A material development to form ePTFE/elastomer composites

Electric Mobility asks for smaller e-motors, with higher rpm. It also requires thermal management with valves having doing switching cycles. Also, energy management in electric vehicles benefits from reducing losses due to friction. Seals (shaft seals of seals in valves) are often made from elastomers, who generally have considerably high friction factors. The talk proposes a new permanent seal surface coating made of graphite filled expanded PTFE that greatly reduces friction but is significantly more wear resistant. Moreover it uses a mechanical bond, which is orders of magnitude stronger then traditional chemical bonds. Finally it is thinner and flexible allowing to form even complex shapes and to maintain the good sealability and elasticity of elastomers.

The talk presents a new material: a low friction film to coat elastomer parts. It also discusses applications and potential value and benefits for energy saving and life time extension while maintaining sealability.
